PostHeaderIcon USSF Multimedia Arts Project Launched to Change The Music

United States Social Forum, USSF, DetroitIn November 2008 millions of Americans flocked to the polls, and exercised their right to vote in an effort to spark a fire in Washington. One word symbolized what we wanted more than anything else – CHANGE.

Over a year later, one truth has become increasingly self-evident: we can’t wait for politicians to change their tune. WE, THE PEOPLE, CREATE THE CHANGE.

In late June 2010, thousands will assemble in Detroit for two weeks of action, learning, teaching, networking, organizing and growing. It all centers around the second United States Social Forum (USSF), June 22-26 at Cobo Hall and Hart Plaza. The USSF is a gathering of over 20,000 community organizers, social justice activists, groups and individuals who assemble with a vision of a world free from poverty, exploitation, racism, oppression, militarism/war and environmental destruction. These advocates for justice and human rights understand that “Another world is possible, and another US is necessary.”

Over 1000 workshops and seminars will convene as activists teach each other the methods that have worked in other communities all over the world. Concerts, art exhibits, plays, and poetry will fill the Motor City’s riverfront as artists demonstrate that we cannot see CHANGE in the US until we change the culture.

In an effort to raise awareness and raise funds for this forum, artists from around the world are invited to submit their work for a multimedia arts project that will serve as the soundtrack for this gathering of progressive groups and individuals. As artists, our mission is to create works that reflect the world around us, both our reality – the here and now – and our vision of where we should be.

“Any form of art is a form of power; it has impact, it can affect change – it can not only move us, it makes us move.” – Ossie Davis, actor/artist/activist

Metro Detroit-based arts activism organization Change :: The Music is proud to curate and produce a digital compilation of music, spoken word, writings, visual art, photography, and video created by socially conscious artists to support the 2010 U.S. Social Forum (USSF).  The Multimedia Arts Project will take the form of downloadable files available to donors who contribute a minimum of $5, with all proceeds going directly to the U.S. Social Forum.

Now Playing: Love TKO – Nadir’s Distorted Soul Live at Memphis Smoke

Teddy Pendergrass RIP

Teddy Pendergrass was a giant among men. An amazing singer, and charismatic performer, he provided even greater inspiration when he returned to music making and performing after a tragic car accident left him paralyzed. His strength and courage is an example to all of us as we deal with whatever trials and tribulations come into our lives.

Rest in Peace, Teddy. We love you and will miss you.

“Love TKO” is my favorite Teddy song, and one of my favorite songs period. I’ve been performing it for years, always doing my best to live up to Teddy’s powerful vocals. I’ve never quite made it, but I sure have fun making the attempt.

PostHeaderIcon Why Music is Like an Addiction…and Why I Will Never Quit

My name is Nadir, and I’m an addict. I’ve been addicted to playing music for a very long time. And being addicted to music is like being addicted to crack.

Okay. I’ll confess. I’ve never smoked crack.

But the rush of being onstage… When I’ve got the mic in my hand, and the band is killing it, I am high. At that very moment I am completely myself. Not acting or posing for the crowd, but telling my story, singing from the depths of my soul. There’s nothing like it except…
